|Ultra Vortek is a fighting game that looks like the Mortal Kombat series. It was developed by Beyond Games exclusively for the Atari Jaguar and was praised for its great visuals and gameplay.|
STORY / GAMEPLAY
The world is under destruction and inside an ancient Incas temple a tablet is unearthed. This ancient artifact writes about a mysterious creature; a satanic figure called "Guardian" and tells the story of how this inhuman being appeared to the people of the land and spread the word regarding "The Time of The Testing". Since then, many redneck leaders are trying to gain complete control and rule the world by acquiring this magical artifact. But seven mighty warriors are ready to fight and prevent the dark powers from destroying the land. You choose your favorite fighter and by using his (or her) skills and special moves, you fight to the end. Once you defeat all the other tough opponents you will manage to open the "Ultra Vortek", challenge the Guardian himself to the ultimate fight and, if victorious, you will be able to use your newly acquired super power, to determine the fate of the land. Ultra Vortek is one of the best fighting titles ever released for the Atari Jaguar console and offers similar gameplay style to the Killer Instincts and the Mortal Kombat series.
GRAPHICS / SOUND
Visually, this game can easily be considered as the Jaguar's Mortal Kombat. It features great background graphics with more than 256 colors on screen and beautiful, digitized actors that play a fictional super-fighter role (as in MK). All characters are well detailed and move like a real life fighter (as their movement patterns were taken from actual actors). Ultra Vortek offers a bunch of great arenas with animated backgrounds and a variety of impressive special effects, like mirror reflections for example. The sound effects are typical fighting sounds and they include a variety of samples like punching, laser shooting, roaring jets or even earthquakes(!) while the music of each level is pretty strong and well composed. Overall, I think this game is among the best Atari Jaguar titles out there!
