Review
World League Soccer 98STORY / GAMEPLAY
World League Soccer 98 has around 200 teams to select from. The game modes available are the "soccer game" standard: Exhibition, World Cup, Arcade Cup and National or custom League. You can review players' stats through a screen but details are nothing more than tables with images and numbers. Formation settings are quite limited since only changes on players' positions can be made either freely or by man-marking settings. Also the only strategy to select is defensive and offensive attitude. Note that you cannot access the formation screen during half-time. When the match finally begins, you will notice that gameplay is rather good, although its awkward (at first) controls. Sliding tackles are often hard to perform with accuracy and it may be a challenge to shoot since players can shoot always towards the direction they're facing. As long as you master the controls, everything goes rather smooth and the game is great fun. Apart from the limitations indicated above, the game plays and looks good pretty much like most of the other football simulators.

GRAPHICS / SOUND
The game on the Saturn has impressive visuals. The players are quite detailed (though they look a bit blocky), they're nicely animated (with no frame-rate issues at all) and the stadiums are top-notch featuring animated spectators. Even the referees are present on the pitch.
The sound in World League Soccer 98 is great, with commentary by Peter Brackley and Ray Wilkins. The players are called by their names and the spectators are cheering which adds up to each match. Other sound effects such as ball kicking, referee whistles, ball hitting the posts etc are also present.
